Hi y’all! In April I completed by the skin of my teeth the OWL’s read-a-thon and to torture myself during this prolonged reading slump I find myself in, I’m going to try to do the NEWTs. Honestly, it looks like a lot of fun and I’ll read some books that I never would have which will be interesting.
The Newts 2019 read-a-thon was created by Book Roast on youtube (video below). I came across the read-a-thon through bloggers to I am not familiar with the book vlogger, but she seems quite lovely.
The premise of the NEWTs is to select a Wizarding career path (I will be an Auror) pass the tests needed to earn the degree. To be an Auror you need to get and O in Defence Against the Dart Arts, and # in Charms, and E in Potions, an A in Herbology and an A in Transfiguration. To get an O you must complete the A and E tasks as well. So basically to get and O I have to read 3 books for that class. It makes sense, just not the way I’m explaining it.
Anyway, here are the book I plan to read the month of August!
DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS – Must receive an O to pass
A Book that is Black under the Dust Jacket: An Assassin’s Guide to Love and Treason by Virginia Boecker. I am currently reading this book and have a little over 100 pages to go so I’ll be finishing it in August. If by some miracle I finish it before the end of the month, I will be reading Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark.
Gilderoy’s Memory Charm – THe first book that you remembered just now from you TBR- Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. I feel a great bit of shame for how long this book has been sitting on my bookshelf. So I’m going to read the heck out of it in August 2019
Cornish Pixie! A book written by an English author or set in England Ever Alice by HJ Ramsay. I’m taking a guess that this Alice in Wonderland inspired book is set in England as it’s Alice in Wonderland. It’s an ARC that much like the previous book, I feel terrible about how long I’ve been sitting on this one.
CHARMS- Must receive an E to pass
A Book with a gorgeous cover Everlasting Rose by Dhonielle Clayton- The sequel to The Belles has a cover so lovely it could have been created by the Belles themselves. I’ve been looking forward to reading this book since I finished the first one.
Read a Graphic Novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi – I have never read a graphic novel before, so I asked my faithful internet friends. This one was a recommendation from my friend AJ and several other people said “yeah this one” so I chose this book. It looks really cool.
Potions- Must Receive an E to pass
Polyjuice Potion- your friend’s favorite book– Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. For this I asked my best good friend Jen, and after a short discussion of favorite books of hers I have not read, we settled on Rebecca. I’ve never read this book and apparently, that’s a big deal. I will fix this in August 2019
House ingredient: A book with the cover of you Hogwarts House (Slytherin) The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I am a Slytherin, so I picked a mostly green book. I’ve heard good things. So I’m looking forward to checking this one out.
Herbology- Must receive A to pass
Mandrake! Quick put your headphones on! listen to an audiobook– Size 12 is Not Fat by Meg Cabot. This is my current audiobook read, and if I finish it before the first of August (highly unlikely) I’ll listen to a book about Washington’s Spys.
Transfiguration- Must Receive A to pass
Read a book with LGBTQIA+ representation This is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender. This book sounds cute and some of my friends have read it and confirmed these suspicions. I’m looking forward to this one.
Wish me luck on this one, friends. I’m sure I can do it. I know I have the time but I’m not sure I have the energy. You know how reading slumps are just like that sometimes. This should be fun. Know that I’m cheering all of you on in you ambitious reading endeavors.
Until next time Internet,
